Kinosaki Onsen - Most Number of Onsen Visits in a Day! Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture 城崎温泉 - December 2017
Kinosaki may seem like your typical onsen town but it is not! Catch MerRyan's visit to all 7 of Kinosaki Onsen's bathhouses here in this video:
Kinosaki Onsen - Most Number of Onsen Visits in a Day!
For those who prefer reading, here's the transcript:
The onsens or hot springs itself are located outside the ryokans or inns. Hence, guests have to go out of the inns to enjoy the baths. The baths have unique features of their own and are located all over the little town.
MerRyan helps you by visiting all the onsens and introducing the features to you so you can decide which to go to! The streets are lined with willow trees and look charming regardless of the seasons or time of day. During bath time, you can hear the clacking of the getas, or clogs. Visitors are also dressed in yukatas - bathrobes provided complimentary by the inns.
Here are the 7 onsens I mentioned in the video, they have certain closing days which have changed due to the closure of Mandara no Yu:
- Sato no Yu: 1 pm - 9 pm, closed Mondays
- Jizou Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed Fridays
- Yanagi Yu: 3 pm to 11 pm, closed Thursdays
- Ichi no Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed Wednesdays
- Mandara Yu (closed during visit but has reopened in December 2017): 3 pm - 11 pm, closed Wednesdays
- Gosho no Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed 1st & 3rd Thursdays
- Kou no Yu: 7 am to 11 pm, closed Tuesdays

We are here at Kinosaki Onsen. Kinosaki is an onsen town where the
onsen baths are outside the ryokans so visitors have to walk outside to use the
onsen!
There are 7 onsen baths altogether in Kinosaki and MerRyan
will go to all of them!!! Join me as I begin my adventure!
The first onsen we are going to is Sato no yu. It is the
nearest one to the Kinosaki Train station and it is the newest. It is also busy
due to the close proximity to the station.
Next to it is this amazing display of the getas of the inns
in the town. Find the geta of your inn here!
Before you enter you need to pay for the onsen usage – but if u are staying in a ryokan here – they will gve you a pass to scan at the terminal here. Usually you will get unlimited usage. Please check with your ryokan.
Next to Satonoyu is a little pavilion where you can help
yourself to the kinosaki waters. The waters is kinosaki is salt-based and good
for health! Please wash the cups after use!
Next we proceed to Jizo yu. It is named after Jizo
bodhisattva, which looks after children and the vulnerable. Jizo once said he
will stay in Yomi to help all the souls there achieeve salvation. The onsen
here supposedly has healing powers. It has a big bathtub but no rotenburo.
Night has fallen and the streets are so charming. You can
see people in Yukata walking around the town.
We next walk to Yanagi yu.otherwise known as willow bath.
The design is very traditional and the bath is the smallest in kinosaki.
You may have to wait a little for your turn when there is a
crowd.
Just further down the road is Ichi no yu. It was one of the
oldest bath here but has been renovated.
The facilities are new and the place
is very comfortable with 2 storeys. The resting area is at the 2nd
floor. There is also a footbath outside
where you can use for free.
Next we walk to Mandala Yu but it is closed!
The water pump was damaged
badly by the typhoon during autumn and the bath has since been closed. It will
not be opened soon as it was damaged quite badly. Hope you have more luck than MerRyan.
We passed by Goshonoyu and it looks very
pretty! Goshonoyu is a beautiful bathhouse that designed like a palace and for royalty.
The last bath for today is Kouno yu – the furthest from the
station. It is also known as the garden bath! The bath is famous for its
rotenburo which is located in a garden. It is also very beautiful and one of my
favourite onsen here.
In all the bathhouses, you will need to take off your geta
before you enter. The servers will keep the getas for you and they will
remember which of them are yours. This is so amazing.
The first male and female guest of the day of each bathhouse will receive an
award! MerRyan is proud to be the first guest of Ichi no yu!
That was a lot of onsens in a day! Experts say you
should only take an onsen bath at most 3 times day but MerRyan is a merlion!
