Melaka: Klebang Coconut Shake - Yay or Nay?

This visit to Melaka, I decided to pay a visit to Klebang to try out the famed coconut milkshake.
Have you heard of it yet? It's pretty famous and has been recommended by tons of blogs - it has even been given attention by the media.

I'm not going to put any links here, you can find out more about it by doing a google search for 'Klebang Coconut Shake'.

It's a little out of the way from Melaka Town, so you'll need to take a taxi or drive on your own. In my case, I drove out on my own from Singapore, passing by the stall for lunch first, before heading for the hotel in town.

Is it worth it? Well, more about that later...

The GPS was extremely useful at locating it. It's position next to a Caltex Petrol Station. For people with GPS, put a POI for Caltex Klebang, Melaka. Once you see the petrol station, you'll be able to spot the stall. The stall on the main road is for takeaways, turn in into the little junction for the eat-in canteen.

Voila! This is the carpark where you'll park your vehicle. I went there on a Thursday, so it's spacious and empty. I heard it's extremely crowded on weekends.

There's this little shack where they leave the coconuts.

The canteen is located next to vegetable fields - certainly a pleasant sight to behold for a city dweller like me. You could see the chickens wandering around the fields.

You should be able to see the canteen after you get out of the car.

The above picture shows the stall where they prepare the ice cream shake.

And this is the 'buffet' counter. Take note it is NOT an all you can eat type of system, but it's self-service. Simply proceed to this counter and take the utensils and all the food you would like to eat. Help yourself to everything. However, do take note of what you have taken because you will have to 'report' to the cashier what you have taken. They will then charge you accordingly. It's an honor system here - you can under-report and most likely get away with it... please don't abuse the trust of the people here! It's not an expensive place to begin with.

After you find a seat and bring your food to the table, the waiter will come around and ask you how many shakes you want. If they fail to notice you, just grab their attention and let them know.

Without further ado, here's what we had...

The nasi lemak was surprisely good, rich in flavour an the chilli was 'shiok'. :) The coconut flavour in the rice was blended well. Don't expect too much though, the nasi lemak was just rice, ikan bilis and egg - very simple fare. We also had some curry puffs and fried banana kueh - decent fare, but not fantastic.

The shake deserves a shot on its own.

Looks delightful! It was a cloudy day, so I didn't get the 'shiok' factor from the supposedly cooling drink.. a waste, but still nice nevertheless.

You can taste bits of coconut flesh inside. It's definitely sweet, because it is ice-cream shake after all, made from Walls vanilla. I can't say it is too special - it's just coconut juice, coconut flesh, blended with vanialla ice-cream.

This photo is taken from my seat - not a very crowded day. They provide free tissue. :)

I can't remember the price, but it's really really not too expensive - the shake with ice-cream is about MYR2.00 only.

Final verdict: Yay or Nay?

This is difficult because it is quite an experience to eat here, but the food is not really that fantastic, and it is out of the way from the town. I think it's over-hyped. Perhaps it would have tasted better when it is a hot day?

Hence, my answer is Nay. You can find better food in Melaka Town - definitely. If you don't have a vehicle, it's not worth it to make the trip here. If you drive, you can visit here for the experience, it's about 15 minutes away from Jonker. I heard it's very crowded on weekends, which makes the experience unpleasant since you need to fight for seats. For lunch, I think the chicken rice balls are better anytime.

Location: Along Jalan Klebang Besar, next to Caltex Petrol Station, 75200 Melaka.

  2. Yeah, there's no secret recipe behind this shake.. it's just super affordable.
I think you can find similar shakes in Melaka town itself. The mille crepe cake is much worth your time! haha
